Orthodontics or Braces
IRREGULAR OR CROWDED TEETH;
A case results when the dental arch length can not accommodate the sum of the teeth widths, so some of these teeth overlap each other, rotate, and protrude or detrude, that’s to say big teeth in a small dental arch.
1) ORTHODONTICS
It is the alignment of badly positioned teeth and crowded dental arch to form a beautiful homogenous arch.
2) CONCEPT
The concept of orthodontic is based on; when a gentle constant pressure is applied upon a tooth, this tooth moves on the same direction of the pressure.
3) ORTHODONTIC STEPS
Evaluation
-
First the dentist will take impressions to make models.
-
Then he will take photographs to document the occluding relationship of the teeth.
-
Finally he will take several types of X-rays to analyze the bone situation.
Procedures
-
Orthodontic brackets (braces) are bond to a patient’s teeth.
-
Orthodontic wire is then passed through these braces following the arch of the teeth.
-
The wire, because of its tendency to return to its original shape, exerts a backward pressure on the protruded teeth and an outward pressure on the detruded teeth.
-
Each month a stronger wire is placed into the braces so that the attached teeth will continue to move until they form a beautiful rounded dental arch.
-
In cases where there is no enough space for teeth movements (cases of severe frontteeth crowding) some of the back teeth may be removed to create a space.
-
After the upper and lower arches are aligned they must be made to fit together. This is done using orthodontic elastics which are attached to both the upper and lower arches at the same time.
-
4) MAINTENANCE
After orthodontic treatment is completed, soft retainers are used which the patient must wear full time except for eating for the first year.
The first year is the most critical year after which the patient may wear his retainer only at night time.
5) MIDC COSMETIC ORTHODONTICS
If you are concerned with orthodontics, but worried about its metallic look, lest it will adversely affect your appearance, MIDC offers you white braces that will eliminate all your fears and encourage you throughout the whole orthodontic procedures.
6) PRE ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCE
Pre-orthodontic appliance can help a child grow dental bone. If regular orthodontics is to be made later on to adjust the teeth alignment, there will be enough bone to accommodate for all teeth aligned in proper position.
The early use of the pre-orthodontic appliances may also eliminate the need for more expensive orthodontics when all of a child's adult teeth have erupted into the mouth.
Pre orthodontic appliances are made of rubber (colored or transparent) which apply pressure to the child's bone. The constant pressure stimulates the child's bone to grow. Hopefully, the bone can be guided into a normal growing pattern and assist the child in developing a pleasing and beautiful smile.
Accelerated Orthodontics
1) INTRODUCTION
Accelerated orthodontics is relatively new way to move teeth faster than traditional braces. It can be applied in most cases where orthodontics is the chosen solution. While traditional braces take from one to three years to give you a great smile, accelerated orthodontics can give you a great smile in only three to eight months in most cases.
2) DEVIATION FROM TRADITIONAL ORTHO
With normal orthodontics, one or more of the back teeth are to be removed to create space on which the crowded teeth are aligned.
In accelerated orthodontic the technique is to "slim" or reduce the widths of your teeth to provide the space needed to correct any crowding.
3) ADVANTAGES
-
The biggest advantage is the three to eight months it takes to have a great smile, versus one to three years with traditional braces.
-
This also may eliminate or reduce the need for extractions.
4) DISADVANTAGES
-
If crowding is the issue, your teeth will need to be altered and "slimmed down" to create the needed room.
-
It is common to have an itching sensation in your gums initially as your teeth are moving much faster than with traditional dental braces.
