It is the restoraition that caps and encircles the tooth 

 

usually needed after root canal treatment to prevent tooth fracture or when there is a very large filling to avoid fracture of the filling material or  after placment of dental implant 

 

It may be fobricated from metal/ metal fused to porcelain zirconium or zriconium covered with porcelain, All ceramics

 

It may be made by the conventional method or using CAD-CAM technology for more precise and accurate crowns
